Our responsibility.

At BMW Group Plant Chennai, sustainability is a top priority and all plant processes are designed to maximise conservation of resources and reduce carbon footprint. BMW Group Plant Chennai has implemented the Environmental Policy under the Integrated Management System. There is a dedicated team to ensure environment management and best sustainability practices. Every day, our associates play an important role by promoting a pro-conservation attitude.

100% CO₂ Free Electricity.

We are continuously increasing use of renewable energy to meet energy requirements, making the plant entirely powered by green electricity. Notably, up to 35% of our energy needs are fulfilled through a 1,650 kW solar photovoltaic system, with the remaining green energy sourced from the grid. Our dedicated team actively monitors and implements energy initiatives to enhance efficiency.

Water Conservation.

In Chennai, water shortage is a serious issue. BMW Group Plant Chennai has been working on long-term solutions to minimise the impact by acting responsibly. Total water consumption has been reduced by over 40% with three pillars: use of rainwater, conservation of fresh water and water treatment.

Waste Recycling.

100% of waste generated at BMW Group Plant Chennai is recycled. This is achieved through optimised processes and investments in efficient, state-of-the-art technologies. In line with ‘Design for Recycling’, vehicles are created in a way that components can largely be reused or recycled efficiently throughout life cycle.

Environment.

We have dedicated 25% of our facility to green areas, fostering a rich biodiversity project. In addition, using the Miyawaki forest technique, 4,000 local species trees have been planted across 0.5 acres of the site. This innovative approach creates dense, native forests that grow ten times faster and are thirty times denser than traditional methods. BMW Group Plant Chennai has also undertaken a Tree Plantation initiative in Tamil Nadu through which over 120,000 trees have been planted across 10 districts.
