Page Overview: Diesel engine development

BMW development centre

Development of new diesel engine technologies is one of the main areas of activity at the plant. Since opening in 1980, the Diesel Engine Development Centre in Steyr has successfully established itself as the centre of competence for the whole Group. New, dynamic and increasingly environmentally-friendly power trains are created under state-of-the-art conditions and the current engine range continuously improved.

With every new diesel engine generation, Steyr can point to additional development achievements. As well as improving exhaust emissions, the main development goals are smooth running, comfort, engine dynamics and fuel economy. Diesel drive technology is an important component of BMW EfficientDynamics, the unique technology system for greater agility, with lower fuel consumption and emissions. The current generation of diesels uses up to 25 percent less fuel than a comparable petrol vehicle and emits up to 15 percent less CO2.
