BMW Group Berlin Plant celebrates 50 years of motorcycle production on site.
More than 12,000 visitors expected to attend the Employee and Family Day. New series announced for 2020 reaffirms commitment to the Berlin site.
On 7 September, the BMW Group Berlin Plant will be holding a major celebration at its site in Spandau to which all employees and their families are invited. More than 12,000 registered guests will have a chance to go back in time through five decades of production at the BMW Motorrad plant. It is no coincidence that the motto of “50 Jahre Taktjefühl” (50 years of ’tact’ [the German word ’Takt’ means both ’tact’ and ’cycle’] ) is in the Berlin dialect. It makes reference to the efficiency of the production cycle on the assembly lines, the reliability of the BMW engine cycle, and the tactful interactions between colleagues at the plant.
The festivities would not be possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers, who will be on hand on this day to present their work divisions. The production halls will be open and there will be numerous activities in the outdoor areas in which visitors can participate, as well as motorcycle stage show. Not only that, but there will also be an exhibition of historical motorcycles from the last five decades.
As Helmut Schramm, Head Of Production at BMW Motorrad, points out: “It was in September 1969 that the first motorcycle manufactured completely in the Berlin plant – the BMW R 60/5 – rolled off the assembly line. Now, 50 years and over three million motorcycles later, our plant in Spandau has developed into one of the most modern ones in the entire motorcycle industry. We are very proud of the site’s high level of skill and expertise. And this is something that we wish to celebrate today on this Employee and Family Day. My sincere thanks to all the helpers who have made this day possible.”
Highly desirable anniversary bike
One of the highlights of the event will be a prize draw for a BMW R nineT /5. With this anniversary model, BMW is honouring the fiftieth birthday not only of the legendary /5 series but also of BMW Motorrad production in Spandau. This special edition has been built at the Spandau plant since June 2019. All proceeds from the prize draw on the Employee and Family Day will be donated to SOS Kinderdorf Berlin.
The start of the new series strengthens our commitment to the site
The BMW Group Berlin Plant is also well positioned to face the future. Among other things planned for 2020 is the production of a completely new model series. The BMW Motorrad Concept R18 gives a first taste of the coming model, whose heart is the newly developed, two-cylinder 1800 cm3 large Boxer engine. The brand presents its version of a puristic custom bike for the large cruiser segment Beginning next year, both the engine and the vehicle as a whole will be produced at the plant in Berlin.
