BMW Group Plant Steyr.

Welcome to BMW Group Plant Steyr.

Moving people: for more than 40 years now, BMW Group Plant Steyr, in Austria, has been producing diesel and petrol engines and their core components. As the largest engine plant in the BMW Group, we also manufacture components for electromobility. Our promise is quality made in Steyr. For every drive.

Our production and development team are fully aware that their expertise and sense of quality are our guarantee for Sheer Driving Pleasure. The engines that leave our factory gates power about half of all the BMW and MINI vehicles worldwide. Highly efficient, they are made using carbon-neutral energy sources in regular operations – thanks to green energy and district heating from biomass.

In the future, electric drive technology will play an even bigger role for us at Steyr – because in autumn 2025, we will launch production of the BMW Group’s next-generation electric drives. Development at Steyr is also charting new territory in the shape of a completely new high-performance electric drive.

Environment statement.

We are fully aware that sustainable decisions are fundamental to our long-term success and as important today as tomorrow.

Saving resources in production.

Sustainability matters in every aspect of life. That’s why we think, act and invest today with tomorrow in mind. Because we want to do our part.

At the BMW Group quality matters. But so too does sustainability in production. And that’s why we are running a range of major projects at Steyr to help slash our energy consumption. Over the last ten years alone, we have achieved energy savings over 35 percent:

  • Switching to LED lighting throughout production saves more than one gigawatt hour of energy a year.
  • In many areas of production, operations are energy-optimised, with concepts that work in much the same way as the Start-Stop function in a car: when there are no parts to work, the system automatically switches to standby.
  • Development at Steyr is also future-focused in its aspiration for performance with fuel and emissions.

Another energy optimisation project focused on plant and systems has been analysing machining centres in mechanical production, with a particular emphasis on energy consumption in high-pressure coolant pumps. By installing frequency converters, we have optimised energy consumption in these pumps through speed-controlled operation, saving up to 350 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.

Our aim is to actively protect resources and the environment. That’s why, at Plant Steyr, our production operates entirely without wastewater. By leveraging an innovative combination of membrane technologies, we ensure optimal wastewater treatment, allowing water to be returned back into the production cycle. This not only conserves significant amounts of water each year but also prevents industrial wastewater from entering public systems.

We use materials sparingly and prioritise the systematic reuse of waste wherever possible – an environmental policy that also extends to our suppliers. To reduce packaging, for example, products and materials are delivered and removed in reusable pallet cages. In addition, we maintain a closed-loop system for aluminium chips from cylinder head and crankcase production, collecting and sorting them for reprocessing into liquid aluminium, which is then used in engine component production at the BMW foundry in Landshut.

Responsibility in practice.

At the BMW Group, taking responsibility and shaping the future are core values and very much reflected in our close ties with the local community and our enduring commitment to the arts, culture and society more generally.

Our plant makes a major contribution to Austria’s overall balance of trade, by importing vehicles, engine parts, and plant and machinery and exporting engines and components. This allows us to provide and support jobs across the region. Buying power and a secure society improve the quality of life, and economic growth and prosperity are fundamental to a thriving society and economy – so Plant Steyr is not just one of the largest industrial operations in Austria but a good neighbour in the region too.

Fostering young talent.

Our collaborations with universities, polytechnics, research institutes and technology clusters are particularly important. But we have also developed tailored programmes to help people join and progress up through our company. Plus, we offer a large number of internships for students from universities and polytechnics. For a great many emerging scientists, BMW Group Plant Steyr offers a reference point for practice in their dissertations too.

Youngstars.

We also believe in the importance of kindling an interest in technology in kids and young people from a very early age. For school kids, for example, we offer special plant tours. And for those deciding what profession to follow, there’s our special HiTec! event. According to the feedback we have had so far, Year 8 and 9 students find the world of BMW fascinating and see the company as an attractive employment option.

We are currently training around 100 apprentices for technical jobs and are pleased to see that women already account for about 20 percent of apprentices in technical fields.

Moving people.

Located in the Münichholz area of Steyr, Austria, we are the BMW Group’s largest engine plant worldwide. The hard work and commitment of our employees has made us a major powerhouse for the country and a longstanding contributor to prosperity in the region. Our skilled and highly motivated team are key to the BMW Group’s success in Austria – and they all have one thing in common: their passion for premium products and individual mobility.

Health Initiative.

BMW Group Plant Steyr has developed a health management system that rests on two pillars:

  • Optimised working environments that minimise the strain on employees by taking into account the full spectrum of ergonomic factors, from noise and light to working-time models.
  • Awareness-raising around health issues, ranging from a variety of training courses for different groups to our fitness studio, where employees can train on gym equipment or take courses in pilates, back health or yoga.

Our overarching goal is for our Health Initiative and many other campaigns to implement measures today that will help keep us fit and healthy tomorrow.

Age-friendly working.

Our new assembly lines for modular engines are specially tailored to the requirements of an older workforce: height-adjustable electric monorails ensure optimum ergonomics for all workers, irrespective of build, while grippers and handling equipment take the strain off those who handle heavy components such as 8 kg exhaust turbos.

Innovative lighting concept.

The assembly hall is another innovation in its own right, with an all-new lighting concept that is easier on the eyes and more pleasant to work in. It also has a new colour concept in which all the surfaces are as light as possible – and mainly white. This may seem surprising at first but creates a more friendly and attractive impression. In addition, any marks are easier to see and can be removed immediately. Safety, order and cleanliness go hand in hand – forming yet another aspect of premium quality.

Easy on the ears.

Another important contributor to health and wellbeing is the acoustics at the various workplaces. A false ceiling and a range of sound protection measures are setting new standards.

Support for families.

BMW MINIs offers daycare for employees’ children during the summer holidays and suits the needs of our team perfectly.

Care for kids.

Since 2014 we have been cooperating with Drehscheibe Kind to provide a place for employees’ kids between seven and 17 to spend the school holidays. The offering includes a dedicated play and exercise area on the plant premises and a varied programme of crafting, play, sports and learning.
